Posters

Posters

We had to do some research on posters as well because part of this project was to create a poster which has the purpose of advertising and promoting the movie. So we researched the posters and looked at the detail that was put in and what the codes and conventions are for this.

Looper Poster

The poster is split into the future and the past. As you can see, the older character may have to face his past whilst the younger character may have to fight his future. The film is all to do with time travelling and shows the older person as the future of the younger person. The older character is pointing his gun to the left which represents the past whilst the younger guy is pointing it to the right which represents the future. The poster makes you think as you don’t know if they are fighting each other or working together.

What publishers do when they have made a poster, they mention all the companies and sponsors that they have at the bottom of the poster. It is not the most important feature on the poster so it gets put in a small text so your eyes are more focused on the design and image of the poster.

The title of the film is in a large font. They have done this for you to put focus on that title. It is the largest font on the page so it shows that it is the title of the film. The letters are widely spread from each other and this may have been done to show the time gaps between the two characters. It is representing the time travel.
Bourne Legacy Poster

The postershows a large image of a character. This represents that he is the main star in the film and that is who you will be focusing on throughout it. It is not a still image as it is showing him in action. This is good as it is representing a genre in the film. Showing you that there is action.

The black lines that there are on the poster that say “There was never just one” may suggest that there is a code that needs cracking. That might be the plot of the film and the purpose of it all. Posters give hints with the way the features have been represented.
As you can see on many other posters, the title is once again large and bold to attract attention to the poster and to show the film title. Also what some posters do is put the actor’s real name on and whoever else features in the film as well. Then there is the small font at the bottom of the page which shows the companies and sponsors that have been involved in the film making. There are many codes and conventions in posters and these are the main ones.
Skyfall Poster

This is the Skyfall poster. There have been many of the James Bond films that have been released and there are different posters for each of them. But one feature that they keep and include on most posters is the spiral background thag you can see. It is going round and in the middle there is James Bond. This instantly shows that he is the main guy in the film. Then there is the title of the film which has a large text and bold font towards it. The sizes of the film title show that this is a code and convention when making a poster. You need a large font in the title to show that it is the title of the film. At the bottom of the poster there is the name of the companies and sponsors. Once again they have been wrote in small text because they are not as important as the design of the poster. Too much text on the poster will take away the creativity of it.

Avengers Assemble Poster

There is a wide range of main characters in this film. You can see that as it has been included in the film poster because there is more than one main character there. This film is to do with a group of superheroes and instantly you cna see how they are there to stop the world from being taken over by villains. The title of the film is in large text and is bold as well and this is done to stand out to the audience and show them what this film is called. Also at the bottom of the page you have the sponsors and companies that have been a part of the creation of this film. It has the date that the film is being released at which most posters do. If they audience like the look of the film then they will need to know when it is being released.

Conclusion

Overall, the majority of posters have the same codes and conventions. The main codes and conventions that I came across was large font, large background of the film that covered the page, release date and the sponsors and companies. These are the main features that are mosly compulsary to have in a film poster.
